How do you know that?!?!

This is a question being asked more regularly than ever before! Too many people are finding their privacy is no longer private especially in this digital age!

According to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, privacy is a fundamental human right, however every country and/or individual has a different view on what privacy is. Privacy in regards to digital marketing would refer to confidentially and people having a right to be left alone and only having what they want to be revealed, revealed.

You would notice that any platform that requires some personal information has a privacy policy, some of the information they obtain can be in the form of age, birthdate or even bank details, medical conditions etc, this information isn't sourced just on digital platforms, it is present in our everyday life.

As Jaron Lanier explains it is easier to loose trust than it is to build trust. Facebook is a prime example of this. In 2018 it was discovered they had breached their privacy policy to millions of users. Unfortunately, in 2019 it was discovered that there was another privacy breach. This has negatively impacted the brands reputation and has caused upset amongst many users.

Furthermore the fear of individuals personal information being exposed has become more of a concern the more these tech devices develop.

Alexa, as I mentioned previously, is rumoured to be listening in on conversations. Forbes article explains that the Alexa echo devices were picking up parts of consumers conversations without consent and analysing them in order to help with ‘customer experience’.

This concept of privacy is unfortunately being breached more often than we are aware of. It's even reached a point where companies such as Apple have had to release updates to reassure consumers that their privacy is important. Their newest update IOS14 notably has many new privacy improvements, but I wonder if that is because they're hiding something?

With the digital age it is becoming easier for privacy breaches to occur. It is important that businesses make a real effort in ensuring the privacy of their customers is of the upmost importance. One small breach can ruin the reputation of the company. Can you think of any other businesses who may have breached their consumers privacy?
